HARRISBURG – Sen. Judy Ward (R-30) and Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-171) announced Mifflin County has been awarded a $92,000 Keystone Historic Preservation Grant through the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC).
The funding will be used to repair and restore the deteriorated front entrance of the Mifflin County Historic Courthouse in Lewistown, preserving the building’s historic character while improving public access and safety.
“Our historic courthouses serve as important symbols of community pride and local heritage,” Ward said. “This grant will help ensure the Mifflin County Courthouse remains a safe, accessible and well-preserved landmark for residents and visitors alike.”
Ther project will stabilize and restore the courthouse’s primary public access point in accordance with federal standards, ensuring safe access while preserving the structure’s historic features.
“The courthouse building has always been a place of prominence in Lewistown and the county as a whole, from the first courthouse built in the late 1780s at the corner of Main and Water streets to the present and third courthouse which opened its doors in 1843,” Benninghoff said. “It is a vital part of our history, and history needs and deserves to be maintained and preserved for future generations.”
The Keystone Historic Preservation Grant Program supports projects that identify, preserve, promote and protect historic and archaeological resources throughout Pennsylvania. The program is funded through the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund and administered by PHMC.
