Ward, Benninghoff Announce State Funding for Traffic Safety Improvements in Mifflin County

HARRISBURG — Sen. Judy Ward (R-30), chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, and Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-171) announced today that Mifflin county will receive more than $380,000 in state funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) grant program to improve traffic safety and accessibility at key intersections.

“This investment will make Lewistown’s roads safer and more accessible for drivers, pedestrians and people with disabilities,” said Ward. “I’m pleased to see Mifflin County benefit from this program and look forward to seeing these improvements completed.”

“This was an easy project to support because of the number of side and rear-end accidents that have occurred there due to a malfunctioning traffic light,” Benninghoff said. “I’m glad borough officials brought this to my attention, and I was more than willing to write a letter in support of their grant request.”

Lewistown Borough will receive $383,536 to upgrade the intersection of Walnut Street and Spring Street to current ADA and PennDOT standards, improving safety and accessibility for all users.

The ARLE program funds projects that enhance safety, improve mobility and reduce congestion at signalized intersections. Funding is generated through fines collected from red-light violations in Philadelphia and reinvested statewide in traffic safety improvements.
