HARRISBURG – Two state grants will fund traffic safety improvements near Altoona’s Junior and Senior High Schools, according to Senator Judy Ward (R-30) and Representative Lou Schmitt (R-79).
A $103,753 grant will help fund the installation of enhanced pavement markings along the 17th Street corridor. A $36,794 award will help finance advanced warning flashers and timer upgrades in and around the vicinity of 17th Street and 2nd Avenue, as well as Ward Avenue and Coleridge Avenue.
“Improving the flow of traffic near the schools is an important step to make the entire area safer for motorists, pedestrians, school buses and young drivers,” Ward said. “Making sure motorists are aware of the school zone and can follow the proper precautions will ultimately reduce the risk of avoidable accidents and injuries.”
“These grants will help further protect children as they go to and from school each day,” Schmitt said. “Protecting students is a top priority and I applaud PennDOT’s decision to invest in the protection of our children.”
The grants were awarded as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) program, which was created in 2010 to improve the safety and mobility of the traveling public. Funding for the program is generated from the net revenue of fines collected through ARLE systems.
