Committee Approves Ward’s Bill Expanding Eligibility for Disabled Veteran Plates

HARRISBURG – A larger number of disabled veterans could qualify for a disabled veteran license plate under legislation approved by the Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday, according to the bill’s sponsor, Senator Judy Ward (R-30).

In current practice, only veterans who have a 100 percent disability qualify for the special plates. Senate Bill 62 would change the threshold to a 70 percent disability in order to allow more veterans to qualify.

Disabled veteran plates allow motorists to park in areas reserved for handicapped parking. Ward said her legislation would help improve the mobility and quality of life for many disabled veterans.

“Many veterans who have a 70 percent disability still face significant challenges in terms of getting out of the house, making it to appointments, and shopping for the basic necessities of life,” Ward said. “I am hopeful that this bill will not only help improve their mobility, but also remind them that their service to our country is deeply appreciated.”

Senate Bill 62 was sent to the full Senate for consideration.
