In this Update:
Celebrate United States Constitution Week!Constitution Week is the commemoration of America’s most important document. It is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23. The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights. This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention, only 39 delegates actually signed the Constitution. Of those 39, Pennsylvania had 8 signers of our Constitution, which marked the most representation. The framers of the Constitution from Pennsylvania were George Clymer, Thomas Fitzsimons, Benjamin Franklin; who was the oldest of the convention at 81 years old, Jared Ingersoll, Thomas Mifflin, Gouverneur Morris, Robert Morris and James Wilson. The aims of the Constitution Week celebration are to: ★ Emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution. ★ Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life. ★ Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787. Constitution Week is a great time to learn more about this important document and celebrate the freedoms it gives us. Please offer prayers for our country and for those who protect us. A Closer Look at Energy Affordability and ReliabilityI have worked alongside my colleagues in the Senate Republican caucus to provide legislative initiatives seeking to offer Pennsylvanians relief as many continue to experience rising energy costs. As the threats towards our power grid reliability grow, we must work together to find solutions. Pennsylvania faces concerns of grid reliability which may cause devastating outages like the major power crisis Texas experienced in 2021 when more than 4.5 million homes and businesses were without power for days. Rising costs and compromised reliability are worsened by a unilateral decision former Gov. Tom Wolf made to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Joining RGGI will increase electricity rates for consumers, cut energy and manufacturing jobs, and lead to the closure of Pennsylvania power plants. Rolling blackouts across the state will become commonplace when energy production cannot keep up with the ever-growing demand. Senate Republicans are actively fighting against Pennsylvania’s entry into RGGI, obtaining a court order that prevents the commonwealth from implementing the program because the Commonwealth Court agreed that Wolf lacked the authority to join RGGI. Gov. Josh Shapiro appealed that court order to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, where the case is pending and briefs were filed this week by the Senate Republicans to prevent RGGI implementation. Senate Republicans stand ready to pass legislation to repeal the RGGI Energy Tax that has already been introduced if the legal process isn’t successful. We also passed bills that would ensure Pennsylvanians have options regarding fuel availability, help to secure the state’s future as a hub for carbon capture and sequestration and most effectively capitalize on the state’s abundant natural resources through the creation of the Independent Energy Office to provide impartial data.
