State Grants Available for Museums, County Historical Societies

HARRISBURG – Grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission are now available for qualified museums and official county historical societies, according to Senator-elect Judy Ward (R-30).

The Cultural and Historical Support grant program provides grants to official county historical societies, as well as museums with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. Some museums may not qualify if they are eligible for grant support from other state agencies.

“A number of our local museums and county historical societies do an amazing job of preserving our local history for the benefit of current and future generations,” Ward said. “I am hopeful that these organizations can use the grants provided by this program to further their mission of telling the story of our region.”

This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program.  A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-2019 state budget for the initiative.

Applicants must meet organizational eligibility requirements. Awards are based on a calculation that uses the operating budget from the most recently completed fiscal year.

The deadline to apply for grants is January 25, 2019. All grant applications are submitted on the Commonwealth’s Single Application for Assistance system at https://www.esa.dced.state.pa.us. Eligibility information and grant guidelines are available on the PHMC website at https://www.phmc.pa.gov/.
